## What 316L actually means (and what it does not)
Most "stainless" scrapers are AISI 304. Zoral uses 316L, which differs by
composition: 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, carbon capped at 0.03 percent
(ASTM A240). On paper that lifts the pitting resistance equivalent number
from roughly 18 to roughly 25.

Published work on 316L in artificial saliva finds the metal degrades through
organic-acid attack and reports an ABSENCE of pitting, so "316L resists
pitting in saliva" names a failure mode that does not appear to be the
operative one. 304 is the steel in ordinary cutlery, which billions of people
put in their mouths daily for decades. And no tongue scraper brand we are
aware of, Zoral included, publishes a mill certificate or XRF assay, so any
grade claim in this category, ours included, is unaudited.

The defensible version: 316L is the better alloy on paper, it costs us little
more, and that is why we use it. It is not a reason to expect a hygiene
